Hey there, lady! If you have been blogging for any amount of time, one thing you’ve probably noticed is that there are A LOT of strange technical blogging terms and abbreviations! Most people come into blogging without any technical background and are baffled when they come across these technical blogging terms and acronyms such as search engine optimization (SEO)domain authority (DA), and Google Analytics.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you purchase any of my recommended products at the bottom of the post, I will earn a small commission at no extra charge to you. Keep in mind though, that I only post affiliate links to products and services I personally love and use myself! Purchasing through my page ensures that I am able to keep writing useful content for all of you.

Don’t worry, though! Consider this blog post your #1 ‘Blogger Beginner’s Guide’ to the top three most important technical blogging terms you need to get to know.

And why you should even bother learning them!

There are LOADS more blogging terms than this, but these are the ones you are going to want to get to know about first. These are the ones that will help your blog really get off the ground.

Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO

The blogging term “search engine optimization”, or SEO, is what makes your website show up when people search for it on – you guessed it: search engines.
The thing is, how will people think to search for you if they don’t know you exist? Well, when you write blog posts, you will use certain words and terms. Then, when someone types in those keywords, up pops your website!

Your blog gets found through Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEOClick To Tweet

The best part of search engine optimization/SEO is that you don’t even have to learn or memorize any code. If you are self-hosting your blog, (I recommend DreamHost hosting) there are great plugins you can install on your website that will guide you through the process as you write posts and make new pages.

Probably the most popular search engine optimization plugin is Yoast. It comes as standard on most WordPress websites. However, that doesn’t mean you have to use Yoast. I personally use RankMath and it is incredible. It gives you tons of free features that only come on the paid version of Yoast.

Whether you choose Yoast, RankMath, or another SEO plugin, after you have used it for a while, you will start to automatically write posts which are optimized. I still find it reassuring to know I have a little prompt at the bottom of the page though, just in case!

Domain Authority, also known as DA

In very basic blogging terms, this is how much influence your website has. If you are looking to work with companies in the future, this is something you are going to want to concentrate on.

The influence your blog has compared to other blogs is rated by Domain Authority also known as DAClick To Tweet

There are a couple of useful websites you can use to check your domain authority, or DA (I use SEO review tools). Most companies will be looking for a DA over 25 or even over 40. This is not easy to achieve so don’t expect to have anything near this straight away, plus it takes commitment to keep your score up and healthy.

After focusing on it seriously for 8 months I reached a DA score of 28 but it dropped back down a bit while I was moving cross-country and unable to dedicate time to blogging.

To give you a bit of perspective, Amazon.com has a domain authority of 97.

There are many ways to improve your DA. The biggest things you need to work on to increase your domain authority include: SEO, loading times, and links to and from other websites. This is going to involve interacting with other bloggers.

This is why you have to be nice and interact with other bloggers!

And if you’d like to outsource the task of outreach and guest posting to get high-quality links on other websites, I highly recommend working with Link-able to get authors to create that outreach content for you!

Google Analytics

Analytics is the process of collecting and analyzing data.

Arguably, analytics is the most important step toward evaluating scientific or technical processes for improvement. As a blogger, you have a website, which is technical, and an audience whose buying, viewing and clicking behavior can be analyzed scientifically.

Thankfully, Google Analytics is free, relatively easy to set up, and easy to use to learn about your blog and your audience regularly. You should always be looking at your blog’s Google Analytics to see how well your content is doing.

There is one main place to get the best, most accurate data; Google Analytics. I’ll be posting another post soon detailing how to set up your Google Analytics account as well as what pages to focus on to avoid Google Analytics overwhelm!

I would recommend you do this sooner rather than later. Google Analytics will show you when people visit your site, where from, how long they spend on your site, and which posts they are looking at, among TONS of other stuff

Don’t be surprised if your numbers are low at first, this is perfectly normal. You will find that the more you push your blog on social media and the more followers you get, the numbers will start to go up. THIS IS ANOTHER REASON TO TALK TO OTHER BLOGGERS!

It is good to use analytics to experiment and find out what works for you. Find out what time readers normally come to your site and make sure you post at those times. Also, see what posts are visited the most so you can see what to focus on in the future.

You will also be able to see if someone has come to your site from another one, such as Facebook. This will help you work out where your audience hangs out the most.

TL;DR

Once you’ve wrapped your head around these three blogging terms (search engine optimization, domain authority, and Google Analytics) and started implementing the right strategies, you will probably notice your blog start to see a lot more traffic. Even though they are individual topics to master, they all directly affect each other so make sure you give them the time they deserve.

Most of all, don’t be disappointed if your traffic numbers are low at first or it seems like no one is coming to your site. Everybody starts this way. It is only through mastering these three blogging terms (and creating fantastic content!) that sites start to grow. Keep going and you too can succeed!
