Welcome to my tour of the USA. The United States of America holds a very special place in my heart. I moved here when I was only four years old but due to delays in paperwork when 9/11 struck, I didn’t become a citizen until I was well beyond 18. This meant that I had to apply for citizenship and take the exam myself, instead of obtaining it through my parents as a minor.
I grew up in Florida and had some experience traveling the USA so I knew I loved it already, but the experience of applying, interviewing, and testing to become a citizen of the country I loved so much was an amazing experience for me. The process fostered even more feelings of love, pride, loyalty, and belonging than I had before.
And who could blame me? Living and traveling in the US has given me the opportunity to experience:
- everything from forest to desert, beaches to mountains, major metropolis to tiny rural towns,
- people, cultures, and foods from all over the world,
- the opportunity to make something of yourself as long as you’re willing to put in the effort, no matter your past
Don’t get me wrong. I know the US isn’t perfect; no country is. But it has been kind to me and I owe it the lifestyle I am now able to maintain.
