On average, we pick up our phones 58 times every day. And as entrepreneurs, that number is likely to be elevated significantly.
Some of this time is spent checking our bank balance, sending important emails, or performing work tasks. But, much of it is spent on less important tasks. You might spend hours scrolling through social media feeds or looking at photos and videos. You probably spend some time sending messages and communicating with friends. You might even use your smartphone to waste time playing games when you are bored or waiting for something in the real world.
But our phones can do so much more. When used well, technology, including your smartphone can improve your health and well being, help you to live longer, and impact your quality of life in a positive way. And not just by making you laugh at cat memes. Here are four of the ways that your smartphone could (and should) be improving your health.

Count Your Steps
The general recommendation is that we walk 10000 steps a day. This can reduce your stress levels, boost your circulation, reduce blood pressure, and improve your heart health. It can also help you to control your weight by burning more calories and improve your overall strength by working and toning your muscles.
But, most of us think that we take more steps than we actually do. The first time you use an activity tracker or monitor your steps with your smartphone, it’s often a bit of a surprise. Your smartphone can improve your health by using it to monitor your steps and make gradual increases.
Improve Your Senses
Of course, I am not going to deny that your phone can have a negative effect on your senses. Staring at a screen all day can hurt your eyesight, and those of us that work on screens need to make sure that we get regular eye tests. But, this isn’t usually a problem, and time off can be all it takes to reduce the damage.
However, if you work from your phone or spend hours listening to music or videos, damage to your hearing may be more permanent. Pairing your phone with other technology can be a tremendous help though if you have started to suffer from hearing loss or impaired hearing or are worried about possible damage.

Sure, technology and phones aren’t always welcome guests in our personal health and wellbeing. However, I would argue that technology and your smartphone can improve your health if used appropriately.
