It’s still possible to work when you’re a bit unwell
There’s nothing worse than having to go to work when you don’t feel well- whether you’re dealing with a stomach ache, coughs and sneezes, a toothache or any other ailment. Having to stand on a crowded bus or train to get to work or sit in rush hour traffic, then be surrounded by lots of other people, bright lights and a boss breathing down your neck to get things done. It’s not nice at the best of times, and even more so when you’re under the weather.
However, when you work from home, it’s easy to keep on going even if you’re a little unwell. You can work from your bed, you can take breaks when you need to and you have all of the comforts of your home so it’s not as bad. You don’t have to worry about spreading your illness to anyone else, and it’s generally much more manageable. No need to suffer more than necessary or have to lose money taking a day off, as working with minor illness is very doable when your job is at home.
Not exposed to as many bugs and illnesses
Speaking of spreading illnesses, one of the health benefits of working from home definitely means you’re exposed to these things less. Standard workplaces generally involve being around other people, whether it’s employees, customers or a combination of the two. You’re generally in confined areas, making it easy for germs to spread- especially during the colder months when these illnesses are more common. When you go out to a shop or to run an errand, you can come home and wash your hands and avoid picking anything up.
When you’re working around other people, even frequent hand washing isn’t often enough since any pen you pick up, any computer you use, and any door handle you touch could all be harboring illness-causing bugs.
Easy to coordinate around existing health conditions
If you already have an existing health condition, remote work could be ideal for you. With home-based jobs, whether it’s freelancing, running your own business or being a remote worker, everything is much more flexible. If you work for yourself then you get to call the shots, if you work for someone else then you’ll usually be given your days work and deadlines. This means you can organize your day as you see fit.
With no commute time and the ability to work the hours that suit you, it can be worked around ‘bad days’ with your health, hospital and doctor appointments and much more. Whether it’s an ongoing condition that requires you to research stem cell therapy vs surgery or recovering from an accident or other illness, working at home really could be your ideal solution.
There are certainly many considerations when it comes to self-care for side hustlers. However, there are also significant health benefits of working from home. It is just a matter of building a career and life for yourself that is conducive to remote work.
