Developing Positive Habits – It’s Easy!

StephanieCristi makes some recommendations on developing positive habits and healthy routines to start off your New Year's resolutions on the right foot!

Have you noticed how some people just seem to have the knack for getting things done?

They will say something like,

I am going to start exercising next year

and they do!

But when you try, it’s another story altogether.

You stick to it for a bit and then somehow it all falls flat. It can very easily make you discouraged and frustrated.

Does this sound familiar? With 2019 around the corner, it’s time you start developing positive habits for your blogging that actually stick!

Try these helpful tips for developing positive habits and apply them to see how well you do in the new year.

Start small

Most people want to plunge in at the deep end and change things overnight.

However, if you want to be successful, it is best to start small. Instead of setting lofty goals, build up slowly.

Sustaining positive habits does take a lot of willpower.

Research shows that willpower is like a muscle. You have a limited amount of time to use it before you get tired and need to take a break.

The solution to this small problem is to start small without using too much willpower.

So if your goal is creating a habit of exercising, instead of plunging into 50 pushups a day, start with five.

Always establish your habit behavior first. Don’t increase the amount until what you have already started becomes a natural part of you.

Get attached to your good habit

Maybe you’ve started a project at the office and worked hard on it.

You probably wouldn’t want to let it go because you think of it as ‘yours’.

Similarly, we can use this mindset to our advantage when creating positive habits, by setting up a visual reminder of the investment you have made in your good habit.

You may want to get a calendar and mark the date you started, and each successful day. Watch your progress – with the intention of never breaking the chain.

Are your intentions clear?

Being serious about your goal of developing positive habits means cutting out non-serious intentions.

Research shows that you are much more likely to follow through if you have thought through your plans beforehand and you know exactly what you will do and when.

It’s no good saying, ‘I think I will exercise 3 times a week’. You have to actually start doing it, otherwise, you won’t stick with your goal.

Celebrate the wins

When you are managing yourself well with your positive habits, reward yourself.

Rewarding yourself releases all those feel-good chemicals in the brain, feelings of pride and pleasure. It empowers you to carry on with your good habits and create bigger wins in the future.

Create your own environment

When it comes to developing positive habits, our environment is often what drives our behavior. Create your environment and shape it to support your positive habits.

Each of your new habits will require energy to get it done. The more energy and action needed to follow through on a goal. the less likely a person is to stick with it.

Maybe, instead of finishing a book, you would rather watch TV. How about placing your book where the TV is and moving the TV to another room. Get the drift?

It’s all about creating the right environment so you can promote the change.

Supporters will support you

People you come into contact with daily with can have a significant impact on your behavior.

Research and experience show us that we tend to feel the same way and sometimes even act similarly to the people we spend a lot of time with.

That means that you need to surround yourself with people similar to the way you want to be.

If you want positive things to happen in your life, you can’t surround yourself with pessimists. You need positive people around you who make you feel positive and act positively.

Be accountable

Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who set audacious goals don’t execute them because they don’t plan them out carefully enough. You can’t be accountable for positive changes and habits if you haven’t thought, planned, and put them into action.

A goal without consequences is just wishful thinking.Click To Tweet

You need to make positive goals and put stakes on your new habits to hold yourself accountable. Setting positive goals, and accomplishing them requires energy, commitment, and discipline, plus some really hard work. Do you have what it takes?

TL;DR

With an overarching post like this one, I couldn’t figure out whether to categorize it under Self Care (for exercising and the like) or Side Hustling (for blogging schedules etc). So instead I’m sticking it under This and That.

Please let me know if you have any categorizing suggestions!
